Special Education Department Mission

The mission of PSJA's Special Education Program is to ensure students with disabilities are educated with non-disabled peers in the least restrictive environment determined under each of their Individual Education Plans.
Students who need special education services to progress in school include those with learning disabilities, speech impairments, physical and intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism, traumatic brain injury and visual & hearing impairments.
Services are available to students beginning on their 3rd birthday, and to students who have not reached their 22nd birthday as of September 1st of the current school year. Students with visual or hearing impairments may receive special education services starting at birth, up through their 22nd birthday.
Department Goals:- Ensure a Free Appropriate Public Education in the least restrictive environment.
- Ensure the rights of students with disabilities and their parents are protected.
- Assess and ensure program effectiveness of the district's efforts to educate students.

SB 139 Notice to Families
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, also known as IDEA, is a federal law that gives eligible students with disabilities the right to receive special education services and assistance in school.

Compensatory Services
Compensatory services are used to help students make up for progress or skills they lost when their special education services were not provided.

Notice of Procedural Safeguards
In October of 2020, the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) required the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to make several edits to the Parent’s Guide to the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Process and the Notice of Procedural Safeguards documents.

NOTICE
Supplemental Special Education Services (SSES) are on-line accounts made available to eligible parents of students with disabilities that have been impacted by COVID-19 school closures. Families of students with eligible disabilities can use the on-line accounts to obtain goods and services up to a specific dollar amount that supplement what otherwise happens in school to help their child make more educational progress.
