PSJA ISD cheer team makes district history, named National Champions
DALLAS – Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD (PSJA ISD) Alamo Middle School Badger cheer team was named National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) National Champions for the first time in the history of the program on January 22, 2023.
According to their website, the NCA was founded in 1948, and built upon the foundations of spirit, tradition, and excellence, NCA continues to prove The Work Is Worth It through empowering young athletes across the country. By working alongside coaches and cheerleaders nationwide at summer camps and competitions, NCA strives to build not only strong athletes but great individuals.
NCA National is one of the two biggest cheer competitions that the Varsity Spirit brand host yearly. With over two-hundred teams and dozens of divisions to compete in, the Alamo Middle School Badger Cheerleading team competed in the Game Day Junior High/Middle School division.
Through determination, hard work, and countless hours of practice, the Badger Cheer team also made district history as the first PSJA ISD cheerleading team to earn a national title.
“It was one of the most rewarding experiences you could want for your child,” said Alamo Middle School Librarian and proud mother, Monica Cruz. “Winning at such a prestigious event will forever be memorable for Adelynn and her team. She was so proud to represent PSJA’s Alamo Middle School and most of all the city of Alamo!”
During the two-day event, the team took the lead during the prelims by 3 points, the team stayed ahead throughout the rest of the competition and won with a raw score of 125.7.

“I would first like to thank our high school sponsors, Alex and Betty Cano for receiving our team with open arms,” said Cheerleading sponsor Joshua Perez. “I am so proud of our team for being the first in the district to secure an NCA National Title! We did it, team, all of those hours of hard work and effort paid off!”
