PSJA ISD Child Nutrition Program recognized by the Texas Department of Agriculture

PHARR – The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD (PSJA ISD) Child Nutrition Department received the “Best of the Bunch” recognition from the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) after successfully completing the 2022 Farm Fresh Challenge. 

 

Throughout the month of October, the PSJA ISD Child Nutrition Program offered locally sourced Texas foods and provided garden-based learning activities to strengthen students’ appreciation for Texas agriculture.  

 

“Participating in the Farm Fresh Challenge has a real impact on students, communities, and local agriculture economies,” Commissioner Miller said. “Connecting Texas farmers with school nutrition programs builds healthy habits that can last a lifetime. I am proud of all the schools that participated in this year’s challenge, and I thank them for the hard work they do to keep young Texans healthy all year.”  

 

Challenge participants earn recognition by doing the following: serving three or more Texas foods (each full week for Best of the Bunch recognition and anytime during the challenge for Prime Participants); providing agricultural education opportunities for students; and sharing accomplishments on social media using #FarmFreshTexas. 

 

“This is a great honor to be bestowed on our program, meeting the TDA Farm Fresh Challenge was successful because of diligent team members, from our menu planner to our cafeteria line servers, who have a commitment to excellence,” said PSJA Child Nutrition Director Corina Gonzalez. “We all are striving to promote and advance the health and well-being of students and staff at PSJA ISD. Although we were met with challenges, thinking outside the box, we were able and continue to provide a variety of locally grown products on our menu to our students.” 

 

The PSJA ISD Child Nutrition Program joined 156 other school districts and charter organizations for the annual event, pledging to eat local, teach local, and be social. By serving healthy and balanced meals, offering agricultural and nutrition education, and prioritizing local Texas foods, the program has demonstrated dedication to the well-being of their students while recognizing the efforts of local farmers and ranchers to provide high-quality food.
