PSJA to begin administering COVID-19 Bivalent Vaccine Boosters

PHARR – As an approved COVID-19 vaccine provider site by the State of Texas, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD (PSJA ISD) will be receiving Moderna and Pfizer Bivalent booster vaccines to administer to PSJA ISD educators and eligible individuals starting September 2022.

According to the Federal Drug Administration website, the updated COVID-19 vaccine boosters include components of the original virus strain and the Omicron variant. This is called a bivalent COVID-19 vaccine. The FDA authorized bivalent formulations of the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines for use as a single booster dose at least two months after completing primary or booster vaccination.

“We are grateful to be able to continue to serve our PSJA Family by providing these services,” said PSJA Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jorge L. Arredondo. “We look forward to start administering these doses as they become available and thank our PSJA Health Services team for helping lead the way in making this happen.”

Currently, the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine Bivalent Booster is authorized as a single dose for any individual 18 years of age and older. The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Bivalent Vaccine Booster is authorized for individuals ages 12 years and older.

According to PSJA Director of Health Services Sulema Solis, these booster vaccines are strongly recommended for individuals who have had at least two or more months passed since their last dose.

“It is very important to us to continue offering these vaccines to our PSJA Family and community,” said Solis. “We strongly encourage anyone who is eligible to make time to get these new boosters for their health and the overall health of our community. Health and safety are a shared responsibility, and we must all do our part to protect ourselves and others.”

PSJA ISD plans to continue hosting COVID-19 Vaccine opportunities for its nearly 5,000 employees and students as Bivalent Booster Vaccines become available.

The dates and schedules for vaccine distribution sites will be shared as these are confirmed. Individuals can visit the PSJA ISD website www.psjaisd.us/health and follow the district on social media @PSJAISD for announcements and updates.

Individuals may contact the PSJA Health Hotline at 956-354-2015 for any questions.
