The pandemic has created an athletic season like no other, but two PSJA runners have worked tirelessly to qualify for the Cross-Country State Meet, nonetheless.

PSJA North Early College High School Junior Hector Solis and PSJA Memorial ECHS Senior Wiliams Macias will both be returning to the state meet after participating in a handful of races this season.

As a way to make meets as safe as possible this year, athletes have been subject to additional safety protocols such as daily temperature checks, mandatory mask wearing, social distancing during practice and travel and COVID-19 screenings. Hosting sites also enforced strict guidelines for spectators to follow to minimize the interactions between athletes and the public.

“Our student athletes are a true inspiration to all of us as they have overcome the challenges of this pandemic and continue to inspire us through their work ethic and make PSJA proud by continuing to qualify at the highest level,” said PSJA Superintendent Dr. Jorge L. Arredondo. “They worked hard for this milestone and we’re excited to see how they perform.”

Solis qualified to state this year following a 3rd place finish at the UIL Region 4 6A Cross-Country Meet in Corpus Christi with a time of 16:04. He placed 34th as a sophomore at the 2019 state meet. Macias qualified after competing in the 5A division of the race and came in 2nd place by less than seven tenths of a second with a total time of 15:50.87. He ranked 55th in the 2019 state meet.

According to their Coaches, they embody the great qualities that PSJA Athletics strives for.

Solis and Macias will be competing at the Cross-Country Championship in Round Rock, Texas on Monday, Nov. 23 for 5A (Macias) and Tuesday, Nov. 24 for 6A (Solis) both at 3:15 pm. PSJA ISD will acknowledge both athletes at this Friday's Bears vs Raiders home game during half-time. Best of luck to both runners!
