Campus knitting club donates homemade scarves to local nursing home

RYMS student gifts nursing home resident with handknit scarf

SAN JUAN-- Christmas came early for residents of the San Juan Nursing Home on Wednesday, Dec. 18 as a tight-knit group of students from Raul Yzaguirre Middle School stopped by to donate dozens of handknit scarves for residents of the home.

It took the RYMS Knitting Club about two months to make a total of 50 scarves. Club sponsor Sahara Hedrick says she’s been doing this with PSJA ISD for about 11 years as a way to brighten up someone’s day during the holidays.

“My students are going above and beyond by not only learning how to knit, but donating their fruit to those that are less fortunate,” said Hedrick, a Spanish teacher at Yzaguirre Middle School. “It is such a rewarding experience to see my kids knit. With each knot and chain, I know they are leaving a great part of their heart in their scarves for those who need a warm gesture in their life.”

During their visit, the students also got to spend time with the residents of the nursing home and hear from them as they shared stories about their lives and families.
