PSJA ISD to kick-off Centennial Celebrations
The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District is planning various activities throughout the 2019-2020 school year in celebration of its Centennial.
Established in 1919, PSJA ISD is the only educational institution in the tri-city area to reach this milestone. On March 15, 1919 Common School District No. 4 in Hidalgo County became Pharr-San Juan Independent School District. Forty years later in 1959, Alamo merged with the district, establishing what is now known as the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District, a district that caters to a 32,000-plus student body and leads on a culture of pride and excellence.
Through the years, PSJA ISD has become a state and national leader in creating more academic opportunities for all students, offering unique initiatives and programs with a clear focus of graduating all students College Ready, College Connected and College Complete.
With hundreds of thousands of alumni all over the world, PSJA is a true family with deep roots within its community and surrounding areas. The goal of this year’s Centennial Celebrations is to unite all current families, alumni, staff and former staff members to celebrate, reminisce and look forward to the future!
Celebrating 100 Years of History
Starting next month, the PSJA ISD School Board and Administration invite all members of the PSJA Family to celebrate the 100 years of PSJA by gathering at various events throughout the school year. To commemorate such a feat, a 10-month calendar has been released with planned community events for all ages.
It will all start with the almost 5,000 district employees gathering at the Bert Ogden Arena for a special Welcome Back-Staff Convocation on Monday, Aug. 12. This big pep-rally will kick-off the new school year and Centennial celebrations for all staff, followed by a Community Kick-Off Event, which will be open to the general public and will take place at PSJA Stadium the evening of Saturday, Sept. 14.
Every month will feature a decade full of PSJA history with the first Friday of the month being a “Dress Up as the Decade Day” and students and staff at every campus will be emerged with facts and history about that time. The district’s Library Services and Social Studies Curriculum Departments have joined forces to provide fun and engaging curriculum and projects for students to learn how life was like in their town during that decade and around the world.
Homecoming and sister school games will also highlight various groups showcasing the history of the district in academics, athletics and fine arts. On Oct. 24 near Homecoming Festivities, the district will host a Sock Hop Dance, to go back in time to the early 50s. The November calendar has the district’s PSJA Centennial 5K Run/Walk, with a one of a kind Centennial Medal to be distributed. December will be a joint PSJA Family Posada, January will be Movie Night at the Stadium and in February the district will host a PSJA Family Tailgate Party just in time for the Super Bowl.
With March being the district’s official Birthday Month, a Tea & Cupcake Celebration will be held at its original high school now the PSJA T. Jefferson T-STEM Early College High School located on Business 83 in Pharr. A fun day at the beach is also in store for all PSJA Families with special discounted tickets to Schlitterbahn, and festivities will end with a Time Capsule Ceremony at PSJA T-STEM, named a Texas Historic Site by the Texas Historical Commission.
