Announcement: Testing requirements by the state for the 2020-2021 school year.

Announcement: Testing requirements by the state for the 2020-2021 school year.

Good afternoon PSJA ISD Parents,

This message is to inform you of the testing requirements by the state for the 2020-2021 school year.  If your child is in a testing level, they will not be able to participate in online testing from home. The Texas Education Agency is requiring students to take the test in person at our schools.

At PSJA ISD, we will be scheduling our students to come in at different times during the testing window to ensure we have small numbers of students and staff at our schools to maintain the health and safety of all.

The first scheduled state assessment is the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment, better known as TELPAS. This test is for students who are English learners in grades 2nd – 12th

TELPAS is a test for students in Texas public schools who are learning the English Language and identified as Limited English Proficient/English Learners. It evaluates their progress in the English language throughout the course of the year.  Students who do not take the TELPAS test will be missing an opportunity to potentially be reclassified as English Proficient.

The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, commonly referred to as STAAR and the End of Course (EOC) tests will also require in person testing at our schools. The STAAR and EOC are a series of standardizes tests used in Texas public schools to assess a student’s achievements and knowledge learned in each subject area.

Students in grades 3rd-12th are scheduled to take these tests. High School students who do not participate in EOC assessments will be missing an opportunity to meet graduation requirements.

Please use the following link to indicate if your child WILL or WILL NOT participate in this year’s state assessments.

A campus staff member will be calling you to schedule your child for testing. Please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any questions about this process.

Thank you!
