PSJA Tri-City Theatre Presents Powerful Production of "Zoot Suit,” Showcasing District's Top Thespians
PHARR – Pharr-San Juan- Alamo- ISD (PSJA ISD) Tri-City Theatre Company is currently hosting their production of “Zoot Suit” by Luis Valdez on September 12, 14, 15, and 16, at the PSJA North Early College High School Gilberto Zepeda, Jr. Performing Arts Center.
The PSJA Tri-City Theatre is comprised of top thespians from across the district and aims to cultivate a diverse and supportive atmosphere, empowering young thespians to thrive on-stage in the world of storytelling, performance, and theatrical design.
During the summer, the PSJA Rising Stars Theatre Camp welcomes aspiring thespians to participate in an immersive program led by renowned industry professionals from Chicago, Dallas, and Austin. Over two weeks, participants receive intensive training in acting, singing, dancing, and technical theatre.
This year the production of “Zoot Suit” takes audiences on a captivating journey into the vibrant Chicano culture of the 1940s. With a cast and crew fully dedicated to the story's historical importance, they deliver a compelling performance that highlights the racial tensions and cultural pride reflected in the play.
Bryan Honl, Drama Teacher at PSJA North Early College High School (ECHS), collaborates with drama teachers across the district to produce annual productions like “Zoot Suit.”
“This is our second annual PSJA Tri-City Theatre production, we started with Chicago last year, and now we're doing Zoot Suit,” said Bryan Honl. “The magic of the production is that it unites students from all of the high schools for an incredible show, and we plan to continue this for future productions.”
Playing the lead role of “Pachuco” is PSJA Southwest ECHS senior Jesus Ponce. His participation in the production holds great significance for him.
“There's a lot of talented people at PSJA, especially in the Tri-City Theatre,” said the high school senior. “So, to be cast in this role and just to be a part of this play, is a huge honor. I'm just so grateful and I thank God for all the opportunities that I’ve been given.”
The PSJA Tri-City Theatre will hold its remaining performances on September 12, 15, and 16 at 7:30 PM, at the PSJA North Early College High School Gilberto Zepeda, Jr. Performing Arts Center. There will also be a special matinee on September 14 at 2:30 PM.
