AVID Program

 

Who is an AVID student?

Students who have the desire and determination to attend a four-year college and:

• Willingness to undertake demanding preparation for college
• Have appropriate classroom behavior
• Have between a 2.0 and 3.5 grade point average
• Have a good attendance record
• In addition to the above also meets the selection criteria of the Campus AVID Site Team

 

Expectations

The AVID program requires hard work and perseverance and is effective only if participation is voluntary. Students must sign a contract agreeing to:

• Enroll in AVID as an elective class
• Enroll in a rigorous course of study
• Study at least one to two hours a day and complete all assignments
• Maintain an organized AVID binder that includes class notes, study material, assignments, and completed work
• Participate in AVID tutorial groups
• Assist teachers and students in maintaining a positive learning environment
• Participate in AVID field trips and activities
• Take the PSAT and SAT or ACT in high school
• Apply for scholarships and/or financial aid in the senior year
• Apply to several colleges and universities in the senior year

What role do AVID parents play in AVID?

The involvement of family is a priority in AVID. AVID families want their children to succeed and are an integral part of the learning team. As part of admission into the AVID program, families are informed about AVID curriculum and are required to sign a document of commitment to support their student. Family members are kept informed about program events and expectations through newsletters, telephone calls, and parent meetings.

Family meetings help build a strong adult peer group through which families can encourage one another, share information, and become more involved in the overall school program.

 

Few educators feel they have the training for resources to adequately support their emergent multilingual students.  AVID’s professional learning is built around high-quality Communities of Practice designed to meet the diverse needs of educators, incorporating multiple learning styles and schedules.

 

AVID Ignite AVID Ignite is a virtual or hybrid summer professional learning event. It combines best-in-class, focused virtual learning with resources for virtual or on-site planning and inspiration so that educators can start the school year ready to collectively implement best practices that prepare every student to live a life of possibility. AVID Ignite enables AVID members to combine the flexibility and efficiency of virtual learning with the inspiration, energy, and momentum that results when educators from a district or site gather together to celebrate successes and collaboratively develop AVID implementation plans for the school year ahead.

 

AVID ElevateXP is a differentiated, digital professional learning experience designed to empower all elementary through higher education educators to create an engaging community of learners by preparing them to scaffold student success with rigorous content in a blended learning environment. AVID ElevateXP offers learning experiences to help educators gain new teaching strategies, tools, resources, and support that amplify best practices. Each session comprises four, 3-hour modules for 12 hours of learning, and modules may be scheduled consecutively, days apart, or weeks apart. Participants are able to stay connected through synchronous and asynchronous opportunities.

 

AVID Summer Institute is a 3-day, high-touch, interactive community experience featuring a rigorous curriculum that promotes student achievement at the highest levels and lays out a pathway to student success. Based on the teacher-developed, classroom-proven AVID College and Career Readiness Framework, Summer Institute models AVID Professional Learning Practices, best-practice district/site leadership, and classroom instruction for teachers, administrators, academic counselors, career advisors, and anyone who wants to help students fulfill their potential and successfully prepare for college and career.

 

AVID Path to Schoolwide trainings are 2-day, 12-hour trainings offered regionally and within districts. AVID Path to Schoolwide trainings feature a rigorous curriculum that promotes student achievement at the highest levels and lays out a pathway to student success. Based on the teacher-developed, classroom-proven AVID College and Career Readiness Framework, Path to Schoolwide trainings model AVID Professional Learning Practices, best-practice district/site leadership, and classroom instruction for teachers, administrators, academic counselors, career advisors, and anyone who wants to help students fulfill their potential and successfully prepare for college and career.

 

Tutorials

One of the pillars of the AVID program is the tutorial groups where students are supported in their rigorous coursework through the help of college level tutors. It is not a place where students do homework or have others review class content if they were absent or not paying attention. Students should be prepared with their notes, completed or partially completed homework, and completed Tutorial Request Forms (TRFs). The goals of a tutorial are:

1. To teach students the skills needed to work collaboratively to solve problems.
2. To empower students to answer their own questions by posing questions, which helps students to think more deeply about what they are learning.
3. To guide students in high-level discussions as a means of developing vocabulary, enhancing discussion skills and fostering thought processes which enable students to succeed in their classes.
4. To reinforce writing skills through review of notes, learning logs, essays, etc.

AVID Tutor Job Description

Tutor will tutor students (grades 6-12 at area high schools and middle schools. AVID students are taking rigorous (Pre-AP & AP) courses, and they need college tutors to provide academic support and to be good role models.

Desired Qualifications:
Must be dependable, have good interpersonal skills, enjoy working with youth, and have a desire to bring out the highest potential in our students. Tutors become part of the AVID family. Strengths in math and science are a plus.
