Tell us your story! What hardships or challenges have you overcome to get to where you are today? How have these experiences motivated you to pursue your educational dreams?
"You rebirth your brother." As I slowly awoke from anesthesia, those words uttered by the doctor echoed in my mind. Tears welled up in my eyes, and the weight of those words began to sink in. Those words, spoken by the doctor, confirmed the unique challenge I had just gone through, making it the most difficult year of my time in high school, a year that had defined me in unimaginable ways. During Spring Break of my junior year of high school, right in the midst of the most challenging academic year, my little brother Nahum began his lengthy battle with cancer. Our home became a whirlwind of chaos, anxiety, and struggle. My parents had to focus solely on Nahum, but I, being 16 at that time, still needed their support. I understood that their first and only concern was him, so in a way, I had to learn to take care of myself and build the strength to finish the year on my own. June 24, the day I learned the news, marked a turning point. My parents had tucked Nahum in bed, and the rest of us anxiously waited in the living room for my mom to reveal who had been found to be a bone marrow donor for my brother. "Thania was the only one to come out 100% compatible, none of the rest of us even came close." I felt my heart drop to my stomach at the mention of my name. Suddenly, a profound stillness surrounded me, fading out all other sounds, leaving only that of my heart's relentless pounding. It was clear that I would go forward with the donation without hesitation, yet I couldn't suppress the overwhelming fear that crept in. The weight of the possibility that the procedure might not succeed hung heavy on my shoulders, and I couldn't help but have self-doubt, questioning whether I even had the strength and capability necessary for this life-altering task. I sat there, frozen and terrified, while my mom tried to calm me. Nahum's unwavering faith in our connection, evident in his dreams of us holding hands in hospital beds, provided me with encouragement for the challenging journey ahead. The days before the bone marrow harvest were filled with uncertainty and fear. I was missing out on senior year activities, and the task of potentially saving Nahum's life required constant positivity and courage. My determination to stay strong, physically and mentally, guided me, ensuring that my fear didn't undermine my readiness to help.
As the anesthesia started to wear off, the doctor's words resonated in my mind. “His blood cells will now contain your DNA. You have become like a second mom to him,” he continued. I lay there, grateful for the successful procedure, but anxious about how Nahum would respond. If his body accepted my bone marrow in a month, I would have essentially given him a second chance at life. Despite being unable to walk properly and how quite literally drained I felt, I would do it again in a heartbeat if he needed it. With my parents by Nahum's side in Houston during this ongoing process, I face the challenge of not having them at home. This turning point in my high school career has left an indelible mark on me, teaching me to be resilient, courageous, and a person who not only fearlessly embraces opportunities but also approaches life's adversities with unwavering determination and faith. I am now intimately aware of the harsh realities that often lurk in the background. However, while it is a reminder of life's unpredictability, it has also opened my eyes to the fragility of life and the challenges we take on for those we love.
As I stand on the brink of my college journey, I am filled with a sense of purpose and a burning desire for further education. The challenge of donating bone marrow to my brother Nahum has not only shaped me, but has sparked an irrepressible drive within me to pursue a career in medicine, a journey I embrace with open arms, ready to make a significant difference in the lives of others, just as I did for my brother. Looking ahead to the future, I carry with me the strong spirit created in the crucible of my high school years. I am forever grateful for the ability to "rebirth"
How have the opportunities offered at PSJA ISD, including the PSJA Early College Program, impacted your life?
One of the key opportunities provided by PSJA ISD that has profoundly influenced my life is the provision of a high-quality education at no cost. Upon our arrival in the valley, I initially worried about adapting to a new language and lifestyle. Fortunately, my mom's friend informed her about PSJA, a school district known for not only academic support but comprehensive assistance for families. My parents looked into it and found that it was one of the best school districts in the area that we live in. By attending a school in PSJA, I found many students and teachers that supported and helped me achieve my goals. Now I can profoundly say I have been part of the PSJA family for 12 years.
When I started high school, I joined the PSJA Early College Program, which was a significant experience. My parents recognized the value of a college education even though neither of them had gone to college.
I was able to complete dual enrollment classes at PSJA Thomas Jefferson T-STEM ECHS and South Texas College, which gave me the opportunity to earn an Associate's Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. This gave me valuable academic knowledge and experience, and also allowed me to begin exploring potential careers early on.
Beyond academics, the PSJA community itself offered an additional beneficial prospect. My teachers demonstrated a real concern for the education of their students by providing consistent help, including on weekends. The district has gone above and beyond in providing application fees and admission exam coverage during the college application process. Such opportunities not only made things easier, but also significantly influenced how responsible I have become.
Over the years, PSJA has significantly contributed to my academic growth, community involvement, and exploration of personal interests and hobbies. Lastly, the most impactful opportunity from PSJA to my family has been the extensive support such as, free lunches, student transportation, after-school programs, shelter during severe weather, food drives, and an annual free medical services event in the summer. The schools in the district have played a significant role in shaping who I am today. I would like to express my gratitude to PSJA for all the possibilities they have provided.
What, if anything, would you say to your PSJA Family?
Words cannot express enough how deeply I am grateful to the PSJA Family for everything that they have done for my family and I. I sincerely appreciate all of the instructors and staff at Thomas Jefferson TSTEM ECHS, Liberty Middle School, and Kelly Pharr Elementary School for their tremendous assistance. My academic journey has been greatly influenced by your constant support, and I sincerely appreciate the possibilities, directions, and memories you all have given me over the years. I appreciate your vital role in both my academic and personal development. I hope to make you all proud.
