PSJA ISD Instructional Frameworks

PSJA ISD is committed to ensuring that every student receives high-quality, grade-level instruction in literacy and mathematics. Our instructional frameworks provide a clear districtwide vision for teaching and learning and outline the research-based practices, expectations, and shared beliefs that guide daily instruction in every classroom.

Developed collaboratively by a committee of district stakeholders—including district leadership, campus leadership, and teachers—the Literacy and Mathematics Instructional Frameworks promote strong alignment across campuses and help ensure that all students experience consistent, engaging, and rigorous learning opportunities.

These frameworks establish a unified approach to instruction in PSJA ISD. They guide how the district selects high-quality instructional materials, how principals monitor and support instructional practices, how instructional coaches provide targeted assistance, and how teachers plan and deliver lessons. By working from a shared framework, PSJA schools stay aligned, focus on effective practices, and strengthen continuous improvement across the district.

Literacy Instructional Framework

PSJA ISD’s Literacy Framework reflects our belief that strong reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills open doors for every learner. The framework centers on equitable access to high-quality texts, systematic foundational skills, and meaningful opportunities to think, write, and discuss ideas across all content areas.

The Literacy Framework outlines district expectations and commitments for students, teachers, leaders, parents, and the community, including:

  • Daily access to complex, culturally relevant texts
  • Explicit, systematic foundational reading instruction grounded in the science of teaching reading
  • Strong vocabulary and background knowledge development
  • Frequent, authentic writing across disciplines
  • Use of assessments to monitor progress and guide instruction
  • Collaboration across schools, homes, and the community to support literacy development

These shared expectations help ensure that all PSJA students become confident, critical thinkers who are prepared for college, career, and life.

Mathematics Instructional Framework

The PSJA ISD Mathematics Framework outlines our vision for developing students as problem solvers, critical thinkers, and mathematically literate global citizens. The framework focuses on productive struggle, coherence across grade levels, conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and real-world application.

The Mathematics Framework highlights expectations and commitments for teachers, students, leaders, and families, including:

  • Engaging daily in meaningful mathematical tasks aligned to the TEKS
  • Connecting concepts across grade levels to build a strong foundation
  • Balancing conceptual understanding with procedural skill and fluency
  • Encouraging student discourse, representation, and reflection
  • Providing access to high-quality instructional materials and aligned professional learning
  • Supporting students’ problem-solving confidence both at school and at home

These components create a consistent, districtwide approach to mathematics that prepares students for advanced learning and future careers.
