• The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD Athletic Department continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation in Hidalgo County and will continue to implement strategies under the direction of our Student Health Services Department. We are committed to providing a safe athletic environment for our coaches and student athletes and will continue following guidance from our health authorities. The following health and safety measures are in place and reviwed and updated as needed:

    • Athletes and coaches who are having any type of symptom that may be COVID should not come to school, practices, or games.
    • Rapid testing is available on request based on test kit availability.
    • Temperature checks will be done daily when arriving at school and before practice/game or departing to a game on a non-school day.
    • If an athlete or coach has a temperature, they will be sent home and referred to take a COVID test. They cannot remain at practice.
    • Masks are required for all coaches, students, and spectators in the following circumstances:
      • Outdoor sports:
        • Athletes – masks are required for students unless actively participating in a game or practice activity. Masks are required when on the sidelines, in the bleachers, or in locker rooms.
        • Coaches – masks are required for coaches on the sidelines, in locker rooms, or in offices.
        • Spectators – masks are strongly recommended at outdoor events.
      • Indoor sports
        • Athletes – masks are required for students unless actively participating in a game or practice activity. Masks are required when on the bench, in the bleachers, or in the locker room.
        • Coaches – masks are required at indoor activities.
        • Spectators – masks are required at indoor activities.
    • Social distancing, when possible, of 6 feet is strongly recommended along with wearing a mask.
    • Athletes are encouraged to bring a water container to use for practice.
    • Proper hygiene is encouraged, and hand sanitizer will be available throughout all facilities. Athletic facilities will be cleaned daily as part of a regular routine.
    • In the event of a positive COVID case, the Health Services Department will be notified, and school district contact tracing procedures will be followed for close contacts:
      • Any staff or student that tests COVID-19 positive or has COVID-19 like symptoms will be required to quarantine for 10 days.
      • Any staff or student who is considered a close contact but does not have any symptoms will not be required to quarantine.  Quarantining will be at the discretion of the staff member or student’s parents. 
    • In the event of an outbreak (3 or more positive cases on a team) the following procedure will be followed:
      • The entire team affected will be required to quarantine.
      • Positive cases will quarantine for 10 days
      • All non-positive coaches and athletes will quarantine for 5 days and if no symptoms may return on the 6th day.
    • After a positive COVID diagnosis, student athletes may be required to submit medical clearance before returning to participation, depending on presentation of symptoms, and in consultation with district athletic trainers and Health Services staff. Each case is different and a severe case may require more time to return after recovery. District athletic trainers will monitor athletic return-to-play cases.
