PHARR – The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded the $3,000 Youth Literacy Grant to the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD Buell Central DAEP campus.
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation provides funding to schools, public libraries and nonprofit organizations to help students who are below grade level or experiencing difficulty reading.
According to Carolina Castillo, Buell Central Librarian, the grant will be used to improve the book selection for students at the school’s library. Currently, there are only about 2,300 books at the school’s library.
“This grant gives me the opportunity to weed out some old books and bring in some new high interest books,” said Castillo. “Most of the books in our Buell library are old, donated and previously used books. We are looking forward to updating our book selection.”
As a result, the librarian said her students are excited to soon have better books to read.
“It is only $3,000, but it means more books for our students,” Castillo said. “They were so excited when we were told about the grant and quickly gave me names of books they would like to see in the library.”
