The event, hosted by the PSJA ISD Parental Engagement Department, kicked-off 150 days of spotlighting the importance of family engagement. As part of the special commemoration, Justice of the Peace Bobby Contreras provided the swearing-in of the parents. By taking the oath, parents made a commitment to giving their children the best education possible in partnership with teachers and school leaders.

The PSJA Parental Engagement Program was developed to significantly increase the number of parents engaged in their child’s education and provide opportunities for them to continue their own education through various classes provided.

Being impacted by the program, parents that attended the event were excited to come together to take the Volunteer Oath.

For Azucena Herrera, a parent volunteer who attends ESL classes at the North San Juan Parent Center, she was glad to be able to attend and is thankful for all she has learned.

“I feel great to be here. It feels good for our efforts to be recognized, because we make time to be here for our kids,” Herrera said. “Thanks to the classes I am now able to help my kids with their homework.”

Currently, the Parental Engagement Program offers a variety of classes that include: ESL, GED, citizenship, computer technology, welding certification, auto mechanics certification and security guard certification. To qualify, individuals must be parents of current PSJA ISD students and volunteer a minimum of 10 hours at their child’s school or local organizations, per semester.

Due to the great turnout of the event, PSJA Superintendent Dr. Daniel King recognized Olivia Benford the Parental Engagement Program Director and thanked parents for their efforts.
